• Seniors Shield Competition

Twenty One bowlers from the Wickersley CI Bowling Club took part in the Seniors Shield competition on Friday September 13th.

The day started very warm and dry and the bowlers were lucky to have a full day of sunshine without a cloud in the sky, this made the green run very well.

This singles competition, for members over 70 was run as a round robbin format, with those taking part having been divided into two groups.

The group winners were Pat Kempster and Phil Green.

The final was very close with Phil eventually being victorious over pat.

The senior’s shield was presented to Phil by the Club Social Secretary, Jenny Shaw.

  • Wickersley CI BC Retain Yorkshire Plate

The South Yorkshire County Plate Final

The SYCGBA Yorkshire Plate final day was held on August 26th at Thurgoland BC.

The day started hot with a clear blue sky and turned out to be one of the hottest days on record.

Thurgoland BC green was in immaculate condition. It is not much larger than ours, but has a very high crown and on the day was very fast. This made playing very interesting, with one priority keeping the jack or wood on the green. Bowling over the crown could cause amusement if the jack line was missed, with woods wandering off several yards from the jack.

If the jack finished on the crown a slightly heavy wood travelled a long, long way past the jack. A short wood was in danger of a U turn and rolling back towards the sender, to the amusement of spectators.

In the semi-final Wickersley played Westfield Park from Doncaster and had a fairly comfortable win

    (Westfield 139 - Wickersley CI 150)

In the other semi-final Thorncliffe, Sheffield, played Highstone of Barnsley. Thorncliffe were dominant gaining maximun points in the eight games.

The final was hard fought and after the first four games Wickersley held a narrow 3 point lead over Thorncliffe.

Early in the second half the aggregate score showed this lead to have disappeared, but Wickersley slowly took control and ended up winning 149 to 133.

Wickersley had retained the plate, the third win in three years and were also presented with a cheque for £90 for club funds.

Thanks to Thurgoland BC for providing an excellent green and refreshments throughout the game, to the many spectators who enjoyed the day, to the Wickersley team and finally to Michael Gregory, the team Captain for organising the team.
